04 – Agonal Breathing

One of the worst scenarios to experience is to have a person die during or following the arrest process, or while in custody. Following a cardiac arrest, many people develop agonal respirations. These may look and sound like guppy breathing (like a fish out of water), snorting, gurgling, etc. Research has shown that training 9-1-1 Call-Takers, Dispatchers, officers, and others about agonal respirations saved lives.
